REGISTRATION OPENS FOR LARIMER HUMANE SOCIETY’S FIRE HYDRANT 5
June 8th Pledge 5K Walk/Run to Benefit Homeless Animals in Northern Colorado
Ft. Collins, Colo. (May 6, 2013) – On your “bark,” get set, go! Registration for Larimer Humane Society’s 23rd annual Fire Hydrant 5, 5K Walk/Run and Pet Expo is now open. The 23rd annual Fire Hydrant 5, scheduled for Saturday, June 8 at Edora Park, is the community’s largest outdoor fundraiser for homeless pets in northern Colorado.
Proceeds of this event will directly benefit the thousands of lost, stray, orphaned and injured animals Larimer Humane Society cares for each year. This year the shelter expects to draw over 850 participants and 600 dogs to the event with the hopes of raising more than $72,000.
“Fire Hydrant 5 is a great opportunity for animal lovers to show their support for homeless animals in our community,” said Judy Calhoun, executive director of Larimer Humane Society. “The money raised through this event enables us to provide shelter, medical attention and care for thousands of animals that would otherwise go uncared for each year.”
Event-day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The Fire Hydrant 5 Walk/Run will commence at 8:30 a.m. 9News’ Nick McGurk and Meagan Fitzgerald will be the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies. Derek Brown of 99.9 The Point will lead the pet contests and adoptable animal parade.
Along with the walk/run is the Fire Hydrant 5 Pet Expo which features fun activities for the whole family including the Second Chance Dog Show (with contests like the Skippy Scarfdown, Frankfurter Face Flop, Doggie Doppelgangers, and more) plus Fido photos, paw painting, and over 60 pet- and family-friendly vendor booths. The Pet Expo will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 (noon), and is open to the public, free-of-charge.
Register as an Individual
General registration (May 1st – June 7th) is $30 for all ages. Event day registration is $35. The first 850 registered participants will receive a commemorative Fire Hydrant 5 t-shirt and an event goodie bag full of fantastic giveaways from event sponsors.
Form or Join a Team
Walk/run participants are encouraged to form an event team of five (5) or more participants to help raise pledges for Larimer Humane Society. Who to ask? Closest friends, family members, co-workers, employees, fellow scouts, neighbors, church or community service club members… anyone who loves animals. Individuals that form a team will receive a registration discount. Individual members of a team can register for $25 each.
Individuals and teams unable to attend the event may “cat nap” to show their support. For a $30 registration fee per person, cat nappers will be mailed an event t-shirt.
Individuals and teams are encouraged to register online at www.larimerhumane.org or in person at Larimer Humane Society’s administrative offices located at 5137 S. College Avenue in Fort Collins. For more information and to register by phone, call (970) 530-2945.
Kids Fun Run
For the first year ever, Larimer Humane Society is pleased to offer a special challenge for the kiddos. Fire Hydrant 5 is now part of the 15th Annual “Healthy Kids Run Series” sponsored by Healthy Kids Club, University of Colorado Health. The series includes nine events, each of which offers a free, non-competitive 1-mile fun run for kids ages 5-12. Kiddos who enter four or more of the runs in the series earn prizes. Be sure to have your cards punched at the finish line! For a “Healthy Kids Run Series” registration form or to register online, visit www.pvhs.org/healthykidsclub.
Fire Hydrant 5 is a Pledge Raising Event
In addition to registering for the walk/run event, participants are encouraged to raise pledges for homeless animals in need. Each Fire Hydrant 5 participant will have access to their own customizable fundraising webpage for the event where they can collect donations, email family and friends to secure pledges, and post pictures and stories of their pet(s).
Prizes will be awarded to top pledge raisers. The highest overall pledge raiser will earn the coveted “Fire Marshal” distinction, will lead off the 24th annual Fire Hydrant 5 in 2014, as well as receive a 3-month family membership at Fort Collins Club. Additional prizes include Larimer Humane Society branded items including a backpack, soft shell jacket and tickets to Larimer Humane Society’s Top Cat & Tails Gala to be held at the Embassy Suites in October.
